The heart of the Norway Pond Festival Singers consists of approximately thirty women who rehearse from 12 to 2 on Thursday afternoons. The ensemble was created in 2007 by Hancock residents Tricia Froling and Jody Hill Simpson, conductor. Mary Ann Fleming is the accompanist and associate conductor.
Rehearsals are always energizing, intense, and a lot of fun. The majority of the time is spent on artistic interpretation. Effectively communicating the essence of the music and connecting with the audience is Jody's obsessive focus. Appropriately, all of the concerts are quite "festival-like" in feeling, attracting large and enthusiastic audiences.
Each year there are three major sessions of approximately seven weeks, occurring in the fall, winter, and spring.
The autumn session focuses on music for the the Hancock Family Christmas Concert in December.
For the past five years, men have joined the women for their winter concert in February, presenting major works including Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Faure's Requiem, Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury, a work commissioned by Music on Norway Pond called The Police Log, Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, and Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing. During the winter session, the men rehearse separately, mostly on Sunday afternoons.
The spring session culminates in a concert in mid-June. Past years' concert titles have included "Sea Song", "Freedom of Expression", "Singing Through" and "Generation Song".
The rest of the season is often filled in with one or two a cappella workshops in the weeks between the three major sessions.
There are no auditions for this ensemble. Instead, it is a self-selecting process. Potential singers are invited to come to a rehearsal or two to determine if the pace and level of difficulty of the group is the right fit. Jody will then ask you for a short, private meeting to help find the best place for you within the group.
